Located in the north eastern part of South Asia, Bangladesh lies between 20º34' and 26º36' latitude and 88º01' and 92º41' longitude.The majestic Himalayas stand some distance to the north, while in the south lies the Bay of Bengal.The gangetic Plains of west Bengal border to country on the west and in the east lie the hilly and forested regious of Tripura , Mizoram(India) and Myanmar.These picturesque geographical boundaries frame a low lying plain of about 1,47,570 sq.km criss-crossed by innumerable rivers and streams.Mighty rivers Padma(Ganges),
Brahamaputra(Jamuna)
and Meghna. This is Bangladesh, a fertile land where nature is bounteous.

History

The area which is now Bangladesh has a rich historical and cultural past, the product of the repeated influx of varied peoples, bringing with them the Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mongol-Mughul, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures. About 1200 A.D., Muslim invaders under Sufi influence, supplanted Hindu and Buddhist dynasties, and converted most of the population of the eastern areas of Bengal to Islam. Since then, Islam has played a crucial role in the region's history and politics. In the 16th century, Bengal was absorbed into the Mughul Empire.

Culture

Bangladeshi culture, in many ways, reflects the culture of Greater Bengal. Music is widely enjoyed by the people of Bangladesh and classical, light-classical, devotional, and popular music attract many people. Classical music includes Hindustani devotional songs while classical dance include India's Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. The Manipuri traditional dance of India is also quite popular in Bangladesh. Bengali folk dances are commonly performed during festivals and other special occasions. Apart from this, Bangladesh is a land of great painters and realist paintings by them have been recognized worldwide.
